Guidelines for Presenter

General Guidelines

Who is eligible?

All SDSU students—including those who graduated after Spring 2016—are encouraged to submit an application to present either preliminary or completed results from their original research or creative activity.

Presentations, whether oral, poster, exhibit or performance, are organized by academic disciplines with divisions for undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students. Ten President's Awards ($500) will be selected from all oral presentations. In addition, all President's Award recipients will be invited to represent San Diego State at the annual CSU Research Competition in May 2017. In total over 50 cash awards will be given in recognition of outstanding presentations or performances during SRS 2017.

What do I need to register?

Please read the instructions below and have all your materials and information ready before you start the registration process. Registration opens October 26, 2016. Registration closes at 11:59 p.m. on January 25, 2017. Late submissions will not be accepted. 

  • Students may elect to make an oral presentation, a poster presentation or a creative arts presentation.
  • Students must work with a faculty mentor/advisor before submitting an abstract. You will be required to submit information about your faculty mentor when you register:
    • Name
    • Department
    • Mentor/Advisor Email
  • Your personal information will be required including your college and major.
  • All entries must have an abstract written by the student and reviewed/edited by his/her faculty mentor. Mentors should not write the abstract, but guide the student in developing the abstract.
  • There is a limit of 350 words or less for abstract submissions.
  • Oral and Poster abstracts must contain (see previous years’ SRS Programs for Abstract examples; link to Program PDFs below):
    • Hypothesis or statement about the problem or project
    • Statement of the methods (research that utilizes existing/secondary data sets is acceptable)
    • Essential results or outcomes
    • Conclusion or summary (initial or preliminary results /data are acceptable)
  • Creative Arts and Performance abstracts must contain a short description of the piece with a summary of the process by which you created your work.
    Process is how you put what you have learned and researched into your performance or artwork. A sculptor could talk about media, a composer could talk about musical  influences, an actor could talk about rehearsal techniques like Meisner or Viewpoints.
  • Only one student can be listed as the first author; additional students can be listed as co-author(s). A student can be first author on only one abstract. However, there is no limit to the number of abstracts on which a student is a co-author.
  • Group presentations are defined as having two or more student authors. If a group's presentation scores are high enough to receive an award, award funds will be divided equally based upon the number of participants in that group.
  • Duplicate abstracts submitted by different authors will be automatically rejected.
  • Work must be proofread prior to submission. SRS staff will not edit abstracts.
  • You must upload a PDF of your abstract at the time you register; have it ready before you start the registration process. Be sure to include the presentation title and your name at the top of the page above the abstract. If you don’t know how to make a PDF from Word or PowerPoint, go to the "Make a PDF" page for instructions. Uploading a Word document is not acceptable.
  • Upon fully completing registration (including uploading your PDF abstract), you will be sent an email confirmation.
  • Approximately one week prior to the symposium, you will receive an e-mail notifying you of your presentation time.
